Films are only in Cinemas for a short amount of time and therefore to make it as sucessful as possible, awareness of the film needs to be created before it is released. There are three types of trailers, teaser trailers, these are short trailers up to a year before the release of the film, feature trailer, released 1-2 months before the film release lasting 3-5 minutes and TV trailers, broadcasted whilst the film is in cinema to remind people that the film has been released. The idea of these trailers is to create hype and to attract a wider audience to the film.
What do trailers do?
Traielrs convey the excitement and atmophere of the film. The combination of moving image and sound is more a more exciting experience than looking at a poster.
Trailers give the audience infomation about the film. They show the storyline, the cast, the director and the genre of the film.
The film uses genres to gain the viewers interest, but it must also show how it is different through films in the same ganre; this is known as the USP (unique selling point) of the film. The USP is strongly advertised in the marketing campaign.
The USP could be:
- Two unique genres creating a hybrid genre.
- Innovative use of sound effects.
- An actor playing 'against type'. This is where an actor plays a different role to what they are known for; for example an actor known for action films, such as Jason Statham, playing in a RomCom.
